The relationship between Polypharmacy and Trajectories of Cognitive Decline in People with Dementia: a large representative cohort study
2019
Polypharmacy, defined through the number of medications prescribed, has been linked to a range of adverse health outcomes in people with dementia. It is however unclear whether a numerical threshold of concurrently prescribed drugs is a suitable predictor for cognitive decline. We aimed to test associations between polypharmacy and both short-term (six months) and long-term (three years) cognitive trajectories in patients with incident dementia. Using data from a large mental health and dementia care database in South London, a cohort of 12,148 patients (mean age = 80.7 years, 61.1% female, mean MMSE = 18.6) clinically diagnosed with dementia was identified. We determined the number of medi…
Zum Umgang mit Menschen mit Demenz Eine Hinführung
2019
The introduction searches for a guiding principle that can combine personal and institutional care for people with dementia. It approves the point made by Brandenburg & Güther that parts of subjective, objective and hedonistic theories of „good care“ need to be combined in order to identify what makes sense within these approaches. Following Gastmans, human dignity is regarded as the guiding principle for dealing with people with dementia. To do so, it is necessary to (1) see people with dementia as partner in a dialogue; (2) to respect persons for the relationships in which they are embedded; (3) to acknowledge the identity of the person with dementia acquired through his/her history. The …
Caring for People With Dementia Under COVID-19 Restrictions: A Pilot Study on Family Caregivers
2021
IntroductionThe present pilot study examined to what extent the COVID-19 lockdown affected the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in people with dementia and worsened their family caregivers’ distress. The associations between changes in the BPSD of relatives with dementia (RwD) and in their caregivers’ distress, and sense of social and emotional loneliness, and resilience were also investigated.Materials and MethodsThirty-five caregivers of RwD attending formal healthcare services before the COVID-19 lockdown volunteered for the study, and were interviewed by phone during the lockdown. Caregivers completed the NeuroPsychiatric Inventory (NPI) to assess their care reci…
Nutritional supplements for neuropsychiatric symptoms in people with dementia: A systematic review and meta-analysis
2020
The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of nutritional supplementation on neuropsychiatric symptoms among people with dementia. Methods/Design: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were searched in the Databases PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Clinicaltrials.gov from inception until January 31, 2020. Studies of RCTs carried out on people with any type of dementia who were taking nutritional supplements and had neuropsychiatric symptoms were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Neuropsychiatric symptoms were assessed with the validated Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI). Effect sizes were calculated with standardized mea…
Muistisairaan ihmisen kokemukset teknologiasta osana arkea - turvaa vai tunkeilevuutta
2018
Toinen keruuvaihe toteutettiin vuosina 201…
